DIY Hero

Well, it came down to the top 5 cutoff just yesterday, and thus I am now out of the race after being awarded 8th place in the DIY Hero Contest. Thanks to all who cast your votes for me each day like watering a seed, to help me grow this far! <3

VOTE FOR ANDREW HARVEY TO BECOME THE DIY HERO

Who Am I, and why should I be the DIY Hero?

Hi, my name is Andrew "Articulus" Harvey, from Nelson, BC, Canada. I grew up always learning new skills and taking on DIY projects to keep my hands busy, and stave off childhood boredom. Coming from a family that was by no means rich, we had to learn to do a lot of things ourselves. From harvesting some of our own food, to chopping our own wood in the winter, to learning how to cook and mend clothing... we had a great head start in life of how to do many things ourselves, and do them well.

My Mother was a huge influence in my life, by taking me on several adventures with her to learn many traditional crafting and survival skills throughout Canada and the USA. There at these camps I learned to scrape and tan my own leather hides, carve my own staffs, sticks and bows, how to fire pottery, skin a rabbit, build pshelters, fabricate useful tools....etc. But most of all, I learned how to enjoy contributing those skills to a community of wonderful people. I have since carried many of these skills over into my regular lifestyle, along with the same mentality that enabled those skilled to be carried forward. Since then, the tools on my tool belt grow in number, and the burden of carrying them all is getting heavy!

For a more complete overview of the DIY skills I have worked on over the years, take a browse through the skill specific tabs here in this section. From film making, to music compsition and recording, to costume and clothing crafting to creating custom websites and social media designs, the skills I have to showcase are quite numerous, and varied. And if you are convinced that I am the true DIY Hero, and deserve a break to help bring these skills to the world, then cast your vote and keep your fingers crossed, and together we can make some dreams come true!

WHAT IS THE DIY HERO CONTEST?

THE COMPETITION HOST

As a craftsman, Mark Bowe knows what it takes to make it big. This television host is no stranger to the hard work and passion it takes to make something right. His background as a historian gives him the special eye and appreciation for the care that goes into crafting something amazing. This is exactly why he is the perfect guide for all of our designers, doers, and makers in their mission to become the DIY Hero. He's here to help our competitors succeed while telling a few jokes and stories along the way!

THE CAUSE - AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION

Because we care about supporting the health of our DIY superstars and the people who love them and their creations, DIY Hero Competition, LLC is proud to show its support for the American Lung Association by donating 75% of the net proceeds from this Competition to the cause.

And I am Out of the Race!

8th PLACE
thank you to everyone who voted for me!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECT

The best project I had the pleasure to work on was a film project I initiated back in 2015, entitled "The Djedi Academy" - I had just gotten back on my feet after ending up homeless for the 3rd time in life, and have had a very difficult time trying to get any support in building up myself as an Entrepreneur and DIY influencer. The goal was to gather those struggling with poverty and addictions and provide a creative DIY outlet

WHICH PROJECT WOULD YOU SHOWCASE IN MAKE MAGAZINE?

I would mainly like to share my story. I can provide the spread with some snapshots from my films (Djemini Studios), pictures of my crafting projects (Articulus Intentional Design), and a link to the DIY Media Arts social Network I built to help independent DIY artists to gain more exposure (The Promenade)

WHAT WOULD I DO WITH THE $25,000?

I need to repair and upgrade the broken down RV I am living in right now, so that I can become more mobile, and continue to do my work in inspiring more DIY artists to receive the support and notoriety they deserve. I also need to get my teeth fixed after years and years of living in poverty and homelessness. I sincerely hope that these admission can help us both to inspire and support more DIY perspectives and initiatives in the times to come as economies are shifting and collapsing all around.
